Oh, man. Do I feel like a heel for not having seen “Grindhouse” at the movies? Yeah .. I do. “Planet Terror” and “Death Proof” add up to some great exploitation throw-back fun. It’s too bad that you can’t get the original theatrical version of “Grindhouse” on video here in the states. But in Japan, they have a monster 6-disc DVD set that contains the “extended” versions, special features discs (both available in the States) and a disc with the original theatrical cut (including faux trailers) and a special bonus disc. Awesome! My copy should be arriving tomorrow …
wow, chas. i’m impressed that you’ve gone all out and picked up the japanese disc. i’m curious to hear your reaction. happily, i saw ‘grindhouse’ twice in the theatre when it was released and it was the most fun experience i’ve had in a theatre with my clothes on since ‘evil dead 2’. if it plays at a rep theatre near you, i highly recommend the experience. the shorter (and better, in my opinion) cuts of the movies work exceptionally well on a double bill, and the faux trailers in between them are great. i’m not sure what trailer was shown in the states, but in canada, a great fake trailer for a movie called ‘hobo with a shotgun’ appeared at the beginning of the movie along with the ‘they call me machete’ trailer (the ‘hobo’ trailer can be found on youtube along with the others). anybody have any idea what the trailer was in the u.s. (apparently, there were separate competitions in canada and the u.s. with the winning non-professional filmmakers having their trailers shown in their respective countrues)?
happy viewing!
Trailers on the disc were for “Machette,” “Werewolf Women of the SS,” “Don’t” and “Thanksgiving.”
The theatrical cut was sooooooo much fun. I am so having a party and showing the double bill to my friends. It’s awesome!!!
