“Our Town” for Our Times

Dogville
Since I couldn’t cast my show last night, I watched “Dogville” instead. And I really, really liked it. So many things worked for me … the “staging” of the movie to be more like a theater piece than a conventional movie … the excellent cast of actors and actresses … the very downbeat tone of the story. “Dogville” is also further proof that Nicole Kidman is more than just a pretty face and is one of the better actresses working in Hollywood (yeah, fuck you Julia Roberts, you hack). Now, I just need a region free player so I can get the Danish 2-Disc DVD release which contains a load of extras including a “making of” documentary. The Amercian release is sadly lacking in the “extras” area.

  1. Dogville’ is a stunning movie and it’s now on my top ten favorite films of all time. Lars Von Trier is twisted and brilliant. I agree with your assessment of Nicole Kidman as well. It’s quite amazing to watch the subtle changes in her facial gestures. Can’t wait for ‘Manderlay’.

  2. If you use a Mac with a DVD burner, do a Google search to download the free program “Mac The Killer”, which enables you to put DVDs onto your hard drive sans encryption & region encoding. Then you just burn a region-free copy of any non-Region 1 DVD you want. Last time I was in Europe, I bought Von Trier’s THE IDIOTS and made myself a Region-1 copy when I got home. Very cool.
